Opened in 1984 on the Marquette University campus, The Haggerty Museum of Art features an impressive permanent collection of over 4,500 works of art reflecting a variety of artistic mediums from periods ranging from the Renaissance to contemporary. Located just west of downtown Milwaukee, the museum regularly offers exhibitions showing cultural diversity and art influenced by modern technology.
Since the museum’s inception, its goals of being an integral part of the educational experiences offered at Marquette University, providing a rich variety of art to the Milwaukee community, with visibility on a national and international level, have remained constant. As a university museum, the Haggerty sponsors lectures, symposia, workshops, and tours to interpret the arts to its various audiences.
Mission
The Marquette University Haggerty Museum of Art provides transformational learning opportunities through its exhibitions and programs. The museum enriches the intellectual and creative life of the students, faculty and community at large by collecting, displaying, interpreting and contextualizing art objects from a range of historical periods and media. As a forum for critical inquiry, the museum seeks to promote visual literacy and advance knowledge across the academic disciplines.
